Organic Pest Shield

Chitinase Enzyme

---------------------------------------

The chitinase enzyme is commonly found in worm castings that have been produced with feeds that contain mushroom spores (Ex 1: dried composted wood, dried grass) along with dead insects, or a variety of crustacean meals (Ex 2: crab meal, lobster meal, shrimp meal). The similarities between Ex 2: inputs are the substantial presence of chitin (a biopolymer that is second in abundance to cellulose in the world). While the contents of Ex 1: provide the perfect bulk mass substrate to maintain good worm digestive performance.

When the worms pass any of these inputs through their digestive tract the byproduct (aka: worm castings) contains chitinase from the worms digestive breakdown of the chitin. Chitinase is the kryptonite to the chitin that is found in the exoskeletons of insects. Hence, when applied as a casting amendment, or in our case a casting brew, a shield is provided for your plants to fend off those unwanted aphids or mealybugs.
